www.chemocaps.co.in is the brain child of two young brothers, Samarth and Sarthak Nath, studying in high school at Sanskriti School, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. Their objective is to provide accessibility of comfortable head gear to cancer patients who have lost their hair to chemotherapy or otherwise, specially ladies.
Samarth says “our journey began in 2015 when our grandmother was diagnosed with cancer in Nagpur. With the chemotherapy she soon started to lose her hair besides other side effects. Soon she had to shave her head and wasn’t very comfortable with her looks socially, when people came home to see her or the few times she ventured out of the house. The polyester dupattas and stoles and the other fabrics in the house were neither comfortable on the sensitive skin nor fit right to cover the head. At that time we had to order expensive scarves online and people travelling abroad helped us by bringing in some chemocaps as well “.
Sarthak adds“ my mom was quick to duplicate some of the styles in her small garment workshop by using comfortable fabrics and in specific sizes that would fit my nani well”. The unfortunate circumstances repeated in 2017 with their Mami (aunt) being diagnosed with cancer and then again in 2018 with their Bua (aunt) being diagnosed with this dreadful disease. Sarthak says “one would have imagined that the availability of good quality, comfortable caps and scarves would have improved in the last 3 years but the position remained the same and my mother again started making these caps and scarves in her workshop to help Bua. It was then in one of our discussion with Bua that we came up with this idea of providing chemo head gear in India”. Some statistics put one in three women diagnosed with cancer at some point of their lives. For these boys three women in their immediate family were diagnosed within a short span of three years. Lets hope medical advancements can help humans make this disease a thing of the past.
